Robust Bin Stores chosen for social housing in Brixton

St Mathews Estate in Brixton received £620,000 from Lambeth Council for the improvement of its green space. Julia Hilton of Green Dreams Landscape Architects took the scheme from a consultative stage with local residents to completion, working in collaboration with Anna French Landscape and Tom Roberts Associates. The radical redesign aimed to create a more sociable estate with pedestrian priority: providing play areas, growing spaces and seating.

Lang+Fulton supplied six bin stores and a secure dedicated bike store all individually designed using a variety of materials which would add interest to the overall scheme: Italia-80 louvres, Piazza-44 grating and laser-cut steel panels. One store was combined with a recycling centre; another with a timber clad storage section for garden tools. All the steelwork was hot-dip galvanized and polyester powder coated RAL 7035 for a long-lasting finish.

Piazza-44 grating was used for the cycle store, an entrance feature and three pergolas for the vegetable garden.

The Chair of the Tenant’s Resident’s Association commented, “It really has changed the way people relate to each other and enjoy the space”.
