The Strand: Barrot, Central London

India Place is a busy pedestrian thoroughfare between The Strand and Aldwich, an area of restaurants boutiques, theatres and museums in the City of Westminster, Central London. It takes it name from being located immediately adjacent to India House and is the site of a statue of Jawaharlal Nehru by Latika Katt.

As part of a streetscape improvement scheme around Foster and Partners’ new ME Hotel and the luxury apartments within Marconi House, new granite setts were laid, Barrot gratings were installed and the street lighting was improved to create a cleaner, safer and brighter environment for all users.

The Barrot gratings were shaped to cover a series of lightwells.  The exceptional characteristic of the grating is achieved by incorporating bearing bars which are shaped to a reversed U-profile providing a broad surface area which is both safe and comfortable for walking on.
