Bow School, Tower Hamlets

Bow School in Tower Hamlets, East London was commended at the 2015 Civic Trust Awards for its contribution to the quality and appearance of the built environment. The Civic Trust Awards recognises the very best in architecture, design, planning, landscape and public art.

At a cost of £30 million, Bow School was one of the last projects to benefit from the Building Schools for the Future programme.

The new school has also been praised by Sir Nicholas Serota, Director of the Tate Galleries, as a “remarkable achievement”. “This was a really uninspiring site,” said Sir Nicholas. “It’s remarkable the way in which they have managed to place the building on the site to give protection to the pupils and pay appropriate attention to the environment. You have this beautifully landscaped garden next to the canal and can imagine that young people will really enjoy growing up in this place.”
