Banner Stereo kinetic wall cladding Hydro

The SSE Hydro biggest performance arena

The Hydro Arena is the biggest performance arena ever designed by Foster + Partners. The dramatic structure takes the form of a skewed dome, spanning 120 metres, with external walls clad in translucent air-filled ETFE cushions that can create a dazzling illuminated facade.

Lang+Fulton have now supplied an original and eye-catching wall decoration for the stage entrance constructed from their STEREO-KINETICĀ® Wall cladding system. Each stainless steel tile is engraved with name of an artist, commemorating their performance.

Previously the system has been supplied as an external wall cladding for car parks, public buildings and retail premises and the project at the Hydro was the first occasion when it was used for internal decoration. In order to provide a solid decorative effect and as there was no requirement for air flow or movement, each tile was made longer than standard. The result was a stunning and imaginative method of covering the drab concrete wall which greeted the high profile performers who appear at the arena.

When the Hydro first opened in 2013 Lang+Fulton supplied the Roma-3 grating fence which secures the perimeter of the complex and storage compounds, as well as a Micro-15 balustrade for the elevated walkway which connects the car parking facilities with the venue.
