Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary on a spectacular 48-acre site
The new 344-bed Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary is located on a spectacular 48-acre site at the edge of rolling hills. Referred to as the ‘Garden Hospital’ for its pastoral setting and 17 courtyards, it is intended to provide an uplifting environment, which research confirms will benefit patient recovery.
All aspects of the design, including the landscaping, were therefore given full consideration to ensure the final outcome would achieve these expectations. A high-quality palette of materials was used to provide a richness of texture and convey the qualities of longevity, solidity and timelessness and the contemporary facade references the local stone buildings with patterns derived from the surrounding forest.
Lang+Fulton conducted a full site survey and proposed the supply of 2200mm-high Italia-100 compounds and fencing to provide the required level of security and 100% visual screening. The final contract included a variety of installations
- A 36.5x16m compound surrounding the generator plant
- Compounds to secure two oxygen storage sites
- A compound enclosing a service area
- A length of fencing to screen the mortuary entrance
In addition, a Palermo grating fence was customised to feature decorative flat bars which replicated the patterned detailing of the building facade.
The louvred compounds and fencing reflected and enhanced the architectural vision. The attention to detail and quality of the Lang+Fulton products, combined with practicality, were in line with the ethos that had been set out for the entire project, which was completed on time and on budget.
