Free-Standing Planting Trellis at Farnborough
Lang+Fulton products have been used to created large scale planting screens at Heathrow for LHR Airports and at Farnborough, BMW Group’s Sales and Financial Services offices in the UK.
Heathrow
The Heathrow Employment & Skills Academy supports new jobs and apprenticeships within the aviation industry and is home to a small exhibition space. It is situated adjacent to the busy A4 and order to create a calm and more pleasant environment for the Academy, a 7.0m high screen projects on either side of the building. The architect required a robust and durable material to support the anticipated heavy weight of the mature planting. Lang+Fulton supplied electrofused grating panels to fit within the structural framework; the lower panels were made from Piazza-66 and the upper panels from Piazza-132.
Farnborough
To comply with planning approval the project architect suggested the concept of a steel trellis to support climbing plants and effectively hide the 6-storey car park. The screen was designed with a clearance to avoid marking the high quality finished surface of the concrete and had to have a structure which was visually pleasing prior to becoming “green” with established plants. The 16m screen required a framework of columns and beams. The columns were set at 7.2m centres to suit the building’s grid and the beams at 4m centres with 3 intermediate 120x12mm vertical bars to support the 3.7mx1.7m panels. Piazza-132 with a 126x132mm aperture was specified which met the project requirements for an open yet long-lasting grating.
