Dundee University: Italia-80 compound with acoustic panels

Lang+Fulton have supplied a bespoke louvred compound with integrated acoustic panels for Dundee University’s Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology, which researches societal needs and health advancements.

A key challenge for the Lang+Fulton team was to propose a design optimized to the irregular site geometry while mitigating the noise generated by the substantial HVAC-R system, which supports the Institute’s cutting-edge equipment.

The final project was designed with a perimeter set at 10 different angles, including special posts to accommodate the varied directions, and an acoustic shielding system that met the requirements of the University Building Services Engineer’s noise impact assessment.

The Italia-80 louvred panels came in two heights: 2m facing the Institute and 3m towards the neighbouring properties. A 25mm acoustic panel was added to the back of the 3m panels, mounted on the posts and reinforced with horizontal supports.

The architect’s original design brief was successfully fulfilled while also effectively reducing noise within the constraints specified by the local council.
