Benyon Wharf, Hackney - Micro-34
Benyon Wharf, adjacent to the Regents Canal Basin in London, is a high density, mixed-use, regeneration scheme for a private developer. The site was formerly a timber yard and the brief was to maximise site value without compromising quality. The new apartments were grouped around a private courtyard with views through to the canal basin beyond. Circulation is highly efficient with just two cores serving external access decks with bridges between the two main buildings.
The architect wanted to achieve a lateral visual emphasis with the external detailing; a characteristic of Micro-34 which features horizontal flat bars. The balustrading was used for the access walkways, bridges and balconies and was supplied in a galvanized finish to complement the range of materials which acknowledged the site’s industrial heritage.
