open mesh grating panels on building facade providing brise soleil and service walkways at Strathclyde University

Grating as Brise Soleil and Service Walkways

The Institute for Pharmacy and Biomedical Science at Strathclyde University benefits from an arrangement of suspended horizontal grating panels on the south-facing facade.

DemiMetro-33 pressure locked grating with a bespoke 33x66mm aperture was recommended as the most suitable product as it would perform the dual function that the project required. The panels were manufactured to be fitted between structural supports determined by the building facade.

Brise Soleil

The DemiMetro-33 was supplied with a 60x3mm bearing bar. It was considered that the depth of the flat bar would provide an appropriate level of solar screening.

External Maintenance Walkways

The panels were designed to take a pedestrian loading so that they could provide a walkway for cleaning the glazed elevation and general maintenance. Lang+Fulton advised on the correct product specification which would take the maintenance loading of 3kN/sqm in relation to the number of horizontal supports.
